Firebird Oil Boilers: Prices, Reviews and Boiler Ranges

Firebird Boilers: A Complete Guide To Prices, Reviews, Warranties And a Lot More

Firebird is renowned for manufacturing energy-efficient oil-fired boilers with high-quality stainless steel heat exchangers, compact design, instant hot water delivery and user-friendly controls. With prices ranging between £2,100 and £2,500, Firebird offers cost-effective heating solutions for UK households that are not on the gas grid.

The Irish brand comes with a good reputation in general, and with a wide range of boilers to choose from, UK homeowners are covered regardless of how many bedrooms and radiators they need heating. Firebird has the most comprehensive range of any manufacturer delivering oil-fired boilers for domestic and commercial use.

Overall, the majority of Firebird owners are satisfied with their purchase, although there are a few red flags on the company’s Trustpilot page. Whilst the company has a 4.1 rating, there are only 375 reviews (as of Mar 24) and only 76% of those are positive.

The 2-5 warranty also raises questions although this is offset by the 10-year extended warranty which is a good indicator that Firebird has confidence in its products. The opinion is divided amongst gas-safe engineers, but sentiment towards Firebird from consumers is largely positive.

So is a Firebird oil-fired boiler a good choice for your home? Find out more in this article.

Firebird: A Trusted Name in Boilers

Founded in 1980, in County Cork, Ireland, Firebird has a rich history spanning more than 40 years in the heating industry. From humble beginnings as a heating contractor, the company has steadily grown into a recognised manufacturer of oil-fired boilers, system boilers, combi boilers, and renewable energy products.

With a focus on energy efficiency, innovation, and sustainability, Firebird has become a trusted name in the UK heating industry. Known for its reliable and environmentally friendly heating solutions, its condensing oil-fired boilers were among the first in the industry to achieve high energy efficiency ratings.

Firebird are known for their broad array of oil boiler models for both domestic and commercial use. Its line of oil-fired boilers is suitable for all sizes of houses and budgets.

It has been reported that Firebird has won several prestigious awards in the heating industry including Domestic Heating Product of the Year” from H&V News Awards, and Manufacturer of the Year from Heating & Plumbing Monthly. However, we can’t find any evidence for this other than an advertorial for Firebird’s Blue Flame technology in Heating & Plumbing Monthly. The same article appears in Plumbing & Heating magazine. These are sponsored posts and one of the reasons you can’t trust the word of industry magazines.

Considerations when buying a Firebird Boiler

Installing a new energy-efficient boiler is a sizeable investment you don’t want to get wrong. During your search for the most suitable boiler for your home, pay attention to the following considerations.

Energy-Efficiency

With the astronomical costs of utility bills in the UK, energy-efficient heating solutions are a priority. Firebird’s HVO-ready oil-fired condensing boilers are apparently among the most energy-efficient products in the boiler space.

However, be careful to pay attention to the ErP ratings. Whilst radiators are A-rated, meaning they reuse at least 92% of the heat that is generated, some models in Firebirds product line-up only have an ErP rating of B for water.

That means whenever you run taps or showers, you are wasting up to 19% of the heat generated by the boiler.

Fortunately, most Firebird oil-fired boilers are A-rated for heat and water though, but you will have to pay more for the superior models.

Dimensions

Firebird boilers are available in a range of sizes but its domestic units are compact and slender. With measurements of 487mm (H) x345mm (W) x610 (D) you shouldn’t have any problems finding space for a wall-hung boiler.

It should be noted that system boilers require extra room to install a water cylinder and heat-only boilers also need space for a water tank as well. Unless you have a spacious attic, combi boilers are the best option.

Performance Output in kW

The kW output of oil-fired boilers plays a significant role in determining its price and how suitable the boiler is for your home. If you install a boiler that has a low kW output for your home, it won’t have enough power to meet your heating and how water needs. Likewise, if you install a boiler with a kW output that is too high you will use more energy than you need meaning you will spend more buying a boiler and on energy bills.

Firebird offers a comprehensive range of performance output from 12kW to 73kW. As a rough guide, anything below 20kW is ideal for small apartments, 26kW will heat a two-bedroom home, 35kW is ideal for medium-sized homes with up to 10 radiators and larger homes will need 44kW.

However, we strongly recommend asking a qualified engineer with specific knowledge about Firebird boils in your local area as certain factors can impact the performance. You will be able to find the information you need by using our free and convenient get-a-quote function.

Ease and Cost of Installation

Firebird oil-fired boilers are purposefully designed to be “installer-friendly and straightforward to service.” They are lightweight, and compact and come with a variety of flue options, although engineers say they are not the easiest to install.

Although Boiler Prices is unable to provide you with a precise installation price on this page, the average cost for installing Firebird’s oil-fired boilers is between £1100 to £1800 or more. This cost usually includes the labour charges for the installation, any necessary piping or fittings, flue installation, electrical connections, and commissioning of the boiler.

To find out exactly how much you should expect to pay to install a new Firebird boiler in your home, take advantage of the Boiler Prices ‘get a quote’ feature.

Our convenient features provide access to a wide range of suppliers and installers in your area that compete for prices. We give you the three best options and you can choose whichever quote you prefer — and there’s no obligation to buy. Therefore, there’s nothing to lose by generating a selection of the best quotes.

Warranty

The warranty is a good indication of how much faith a boiler manufacturer has in its products. Firebird only offers warranties of 2-5 years with the option to extend to 10 years. This is fairly standard practice for the heating sector.

Firebird Combi Boilers: Compact, Efficient, and Cost-Saving

Combi boilers are the most popular type among UK homeowners as they require very little space and tend to be the most efficient. One of the main benefits of combi boilers is they don’t need to be installed alongside a cylinder or a tank to provide instant access to hot water via taps and showers.

Firebird oil-fired combi boilers are cost-effective to run and available in two ranges; Envirogreen and Envirolite ranges. These options include internal and external applications. If you’re interested in purchasing a Firebird combi boiler, it will cost you anything between £2,100 and £2,500.

Firebird combi boilers are equipped with patented stainless steel heat exchangers, known for their durability and resistance to corrosion. They operate quietly so you shouldn’t be disturbed if your bedroom is next to the wall where the boiler is installed.

They also have easy-to-use controls and modulation technology, which adjusts the boiler’s output based on the demand for heating or hot water. This technology ensures that the boiler operates at the most efficient level, reducing energy consumption and optimizing performance.

Note: the prices listed below are the purchase prices for the boiler only. They do not include installation costs.

Firebird System Boilers: Easy installation, efficient heating, and customisable options

System boilers can only provide hot water for your taps and radiators by using a separate hot water storage cylinder, which is usually installed inside an airing cupboard. This means they require more space than combi boilers, however, they require less space than regular boilers as they don’t need a water tank in the loft.

Since Firebird system boilers can handle multiple taps, showers or baths running at the same time when installed with the correct size cylinder, they are suitable for homes with more than one bathroom and households with high hot water demand. To purchase a Firebird oil-fired system boiler, you’ll need to spend between £1,560 and £2,450.

Firebird system boilers are built with the same technologies and energy-saving features as the combi boilers. The only difference is that system boilers have lower kW outputs but still deliver the same level of performance as condensing boilers. Again, we recommend addressing this question with a local installation company.

Note: the prices listed below are the purchase prices for the boiler only. They do not include installation costs.

Firebird Heat Only Boilers: Versatility, Efficiency, and Reliability

Otherwise known as conventional or heat-only boilers, regular boilers require not only a hot water storage cylinder but also a cold water tank in the loft.

Because of this, Firebird regular boilers are suited to homes that already have a traditional heating system and larger households that use large amounts of hot water.

Firebird offers internal and external regular boiler options, as well as boilerhouse regular models that are designed to be installed in a boiler house, garage or outbuilding. If you want to replace your current boiler with one of Firebird’s oil-fired regular models, it will set you back between £1,140 and £2,900.

Living with your Firebird boiler

Firebird Boiler Warranties

Firebird boilers typically come with manufacturer warranties that provide coverage for certain parts and labour. The standard warranty typically lasts 2 to 5 years, depending on the model and type of boiler.

Whilst this coverage is fairly standard in the heating sector, warranties of this size do not fill you with much confidence. However, for an additional fee, you can extend Firebird warranties to 10 years. These boilers have a typical lifespan of 15 years.

To activate the warranty, homeowners are required to register their Firebird boiler within 30 days of installation and the boiler must be installed by a registered OFTEC installer. Make sure you are given a completed ‘Boiler Passport’ before the engineer leaves.

Firebird Boiler Controls

Firebird boilers are equipped with a range of advanced controls that are designed to be intuitive and easy to use. Homeowners can quickly adjust settings, and program schedules, and monitor performance to ensure optimal comfort and efficiency.

Energy-saving features include thermostat controls, programmable timers and frost protection which insulates the boiler in extreme cold weather conditions.

Firebird Boiler Cover and Breakdown Options

Firebird boiler cover and breakdown options are designed to provide homeowners with comprehensive protection and peace of mind for their heating systems.

With options for boiler breakdown cover, parts and labour, 24/7 helpline, fast response times, annual servicing, extended warranty, and no excess fees, Firebird aims to ensure that homeowners have reliable and efficient heating all year round.

Firebird Boiler Surveys and Reviews

Customer review sites and consumer magazine surveys are usually the best sources to analyse boiler brands. Whilst they are not 100% foolproof, they do help us to develop a bigger picture of a brand.

Firebird comes out the other end looking pretty good all in all. The annual Which? survey reveals that customers give the Irish manufacturer a full 5 out of 5 stars – which is rare.

Gas-safe engineers have mixed views. As is usually the case, some professionals recommend Firebird whilst others say they are nothing but trouble. This could be a matter of knowing where loyalties lie.

You get a similar impression from Firebird’s Trustpilot page. Overall, its customers are happy and some report they have had their boiler for over 8 years before it had a problem. The customer service team also seems to be helpful in most instances.

The overall rating on Trustpilot is 4.1 stars from 5, with 76% of respondents leaving a satisfied five stars. However, 17% only leave one star which is quite high considering there are only 375 reviews at the time of writing (Mar 24).

Common complaints are how unreliable Firebird boilers are. Some customers have problems every year. The reliability of a boiler is often the luck of the draw, but 17% of 375 suggests that over 60 in almost 400 boilers can develop consistent faults.

However, if you weigh this with the Which? survey and the positive reviews on Trustpilot, it would appear that most Firebird boilers are repairable. Most Firebird owners seem perfectly content with their boiler and the level of customer service.

Which? Engineer Score

Reliability 5 Stars
Customer Score 5 Stars
Overall engineer score 3 Stars
Ease of sourcing parts 3 Stars
Ease of servicing 4 Stars

All scores in the table are based on a Which? test conducted in September 2024.

How do Firebird boilers compare with other boiler Firebirds?

Firebird boilers are widely regarded as a reasonable choice for off-grid homes. They are competitively priced and cost around the same as their closest rivals Grant and Worcester Bosch. The only other oil-fired domestic boiler that can beat Firebird for price is Warmflow

Whilst Worcester Bosch and Grant are considered the more reliable firms, it’s interesting to note that Firebird comes out on top in the Which? Survey. Firebird customers scored the Ireland brand 5 out of 5 whilst Worcester Bosch and Grant were given 4 out of 5.

Engineers in a plumbing forum, however, appear to favour Grant over Firebird. The latter doesn’t come out of the thread looking that great! But again, the comments may be based on affiliations rather than experiences. There are a lot of brand names being thrown around.

Boiler Prices Verdict on the Firebird Boilers: 3.5/5

It’s fair to say that Firebird oil-fired boilers are above average, but there are question marks over the reliability of the company’s product line. We feel that a 3.5 out of 5 is a fair reflection.

Firebird certainly scores plenty of brownie points in terms of selection. Any homeowner in the UK will find a suitable boiler in its comprehensive range of energy-efficient oil-fired boilers.

However, remember to carefully check the ErP rating as some of the lower-priced models only warrant an energy efficiency rating B when heating water. This means you could lose up to 19% of the energy generated every time you run a hot tap.

Another plus for Firebird is they manufacture oil-fired boilers which gives homeowners who cannot get on the gas grid a means to heat their homes. And there are not many brands that provide oil-fired boilers. It’s a smaller market, of course, but there is little competition.

Firebrand’s product line is also competitively priced and the majority of their customers are happy with their boiler. Given Firebrand received a higher rating than its two closest rivals, Worcester Bosch and Grant in the Which survey, there is a strong case that the Irish outfit is outstripping its competitors in terms of build quality and reliability.

We should warn you to be careful when comparing brands that offer oil-fired boilers. Worcester Bosch also produces gas-fired boilers which are widely regarded as one of the best on the market. The Warwickshire-based brand scores highly with consumer magazine and customer reviews but their ratings are predominantly based on gas boilers, not oil-fired boilers.

The overall score for Firebird in the Which? survey, however, was 4 out of five, which is good, but not as good as its rivals. Whilst Firebrid is a hit with homeowners, engineers are not so enamoured.

Engineers say that Firebirds are not the easiest boilers to install or service. Spare parts can also take five days or more to source – which is not good news if your boiler breaks down on the coldest days of the year.

The company’s Trustpilot page is mostly positive but does throw up some questions that might make you think twice. Whilst a 4.1 overall rating is slightly above average, the company has not received a huge amount of reviews – 375 as of March 2024.

Of these, 76% left five stars, but 17% left just one star. Most of the negative reviews complain the boilers are not reliable. This is quite normal for the heating industry but we are a little concerned that around 20 in every 100 boilers supplied by Firebird could potentially be faulty.

This figure is only a guestimate, however, and shouldn’t be taken as a literal figure, but it is something to bear in mind during your enquiries. Ask industry professionals for their opinions.

Firebird offers a great after-sales service and has a technical hub based at its UK headquarters. This gives you peace of mind that your Firebird boiler is supported by an in-house team should you need tips or advice on your new oil boiler.

Your boiler is also supported by a national network of engineers that are on call 24/7. This makes it easy for you to arrange the installation and organise repairs promptly – providing the parts are available.

An area of concern, however, is the length of the warranty. Although 2-5 years is fairly standard in the heating industry, lower-end warranties usually indicate mediocre products.

Companies that offer 7 or 10-year warranties as standard give you more confidence. Firebird does give customers the option to extend to 10 years which could suggest the company does have more confidence in its products than it initially implied.

On the other hand, extended warranties command an additional cost. This is a common ploy in the heating industry and does give you peace of mind once your original warranty runs out. The older a boiler gets, of course, the more likely it is to develop a fault. So the 10-year extended warranty should be taken as a positive sign which gives you peace of mind.

So the question to answer is whether to buy an oil-fired boiler over gas or electric.

Well, oil-fired boilers are more energy efficient and less expensive to run than electric, and in some cases, better than gas as well. If you’re not on the gas grid or want to come off the gas grid, then oil-fired boilers represent a good choice.

If you do have access to gas, an oil-fired boiler may not be the most enticing option at the time of writing. However, UK homeowners need to start considering gas alternatives. Gas boilers will start to be phased out in 2035. It was originally 2025!

So, why buy a Firebird boiler?

Firebird is one of the few brands that offer UK householders who do not have access to gas as a means of heating their homes. They are competitively priced, have decent customer service and manufacture energy-efficient boilers that are comparable to other boiler brands in the UK market.

Firebird boilers are also HOV-ready which helps to lower energy bills and have a high-performance low NOx (nitrogen oxide) burner which is better for the environment.

You can also expect a 2-year warranty with the option to extend to 10 years on some models.

Why You Can Trust Boilers Prices

Boiler Prices were established in 2013 to help you identify the best boiler for your home and to get access to the most affordable boiler quotes from a central location without having to waste time shopping around. Our service is fast, efficient and effective. We source the best quotes offered by national installers and local boiler installers.

But it’s all very well and good reading the information we publish on our website, but how do you know you can trust the advice we provide?

Well, first and foremost, we want to assure you that Boiler Prices does not have any direct affiliation with Firebird or any other boiler manufacturer. The information we present is 100% unbiased, impartial and given to the best of our knowledge.

Moreover, we source our information from customer feedback, and recognised review websites (like Which? and Energy Savings Trust etc) together with gas-safe engineers and other professionals working in the energy and heating sector.

We appreciate that UK homeowners want to know if these new energy-efficient boilers are reliable, efficient and available for a good price. Boiler Prices not only step in to provide information you can trust, but we also save you hours having to research the extensive boiler market.

For the best and most cost-effective boiler prices, you will have to do some shopping around. We recommend getting a quote from a national installer and a local boiler installer to see which gives you the best price. When you use Boiler Prices as your platform to look for boiler prices this is what we provide you with as a matter of course.

Boiler Prices have been providing UK homeowners with trustworthy information and boiler price comparisons since 2013. Not only that but our founder, Duncan Cumming has over a decade of experience in the boiler industry working directly with consumers. He is fully aware that reliable information needs to be improved in the boiler market and knows the questions homeowners want answered.

All these factors make Boiler Prices the most trusted source of information about energy-efficient boilers – because we provide up-to-date and accurate information together with honest appraisals that say it how it is.
