Homeserve: A Trusted Name in Boilers

HomeServe is a home assistance company that provides a range of services to homeowners, landlords, and tenants. Established in 1993, the company has grown to become a recognised brand both nationally and internationally including in the United States, France, Spain and Italy.

The company’s rise has been extraordinarily rapid. After just 10 years, Homeserve was listed on the London Stock Exchange. Over the years, HomeServe diversified its services beyond traditional home emergency repairs. It began offering home insurance, boiler installations, and other home maintenance and improvement services.

A significant part of its success has been to form strategic partnerships with utility companies and insurers to offer its services to a wider customer base. It also made several acquisitions to strengthen its position in the market.

HomeServe provides online quotes within minutes after you share a few details about your home and current boiler. Once received, your boiler installation quote is valid for 14 days and includes the cost of the new boiler and installation.

You need to book a video call survey before the boiler is installed to help HomeServe fully understand your home, your heating system and the work involved in fitting your new boiler. The boiler survey is free of charge and takes around an hour.

Once you choose the right boiler for your home and needs, you can select an installation date that’s convenient for you. Your boiler installation specialist will explain how your new boiler works after they install it. It’s also worth noting that all of HomeServe’s engineers are Gas Safe registered and your new boiler comes with a manufacturer-backed warranty.

Considerations when buying a Homeserve Boiler

When considering buying a boiler from Homeserve, there are several factors to take into account to ensure you choose the right model for your needs. Given that Homeserve has teamed up with BOXT to source replacement boilers for its customers, we also recommend reading our review on BOXT for more information.

Energy-Efficiency

Energy efficiency is a crucial consideration, benefiting both the environment and your finances. Homeserve provides easy access to a diverse range of energy-efficient boilers, each with varying efficiency ratings, usually denoted by ErP ratings.

Homeserve customers can choose boilers manufactured by renowned brands such as Worcester-Bosch, Baxi, Daikin, and Vaillant. The standard ErP rating of these boilers falls between 92-94% which can help to lower your energy bills.

High-end boilers also boast smart controls which give you even more control over your heating. You can adjust your settings from anywhere through an app on your smartphone.

Dimensions

The available space for installing a boiler can play a significant role in the model selection process. Thankfully, the majority of boilers available in the UK market are compact enough to fit inside a kitchen cupboard.

However, it’s essential to consider that system boilers and heat-only boilers require additional storage space for cylinders and water tanks. If space is limited, opting for a combi boiler is the ideal solution, as it meets all your heating needs from a single, compact unit.

Performance Output in kW

The performance output of a boiler, measured in kilowatts (kW), is essential to ensure it can effectively meet the heating demands of your home. An undersized boiler may struggle to adequately heat your home, while an oversized one could lead to inefficiencies.

Homeserve’s online questionnaire offers guidance to help you choose the correct boiler size based on various factors, such as the number of bedrooms and bathrooms in your home. This ensures you select a boiler with the appropriate kW output to efficiently and effectively heat your space.

Ease and Cost of Installation

The accessibility of the installation site and the complexities involved in fitting a specific boiler can impact labour costs significantly. Gas-safe engineers often find that British Gas installations are among the easiest to fit, with components readily available throughout the UK.

The straightforward installation process means that costs for servicing and maintenance tasks typically incur standard labour charges. It’s important to consider the cost of professional gas-safe installers, keeping in mind that installation costs are usually not included in the boiler’s listed price.

While Boiler Prices cannot provide exact rates for every boiler installation provider, the average installation cost for a new energy-efficient boiler in the UK ranges between £1,100 – £1,800. British Gas, for instance, charges £2,964 for boiler installation, which includes a Hive smart thermostat and a 5-year warranty.

To obtain an accurate estimate for installing a new energy-efficient boiler in your home, we recommend utilising the Boiler Prices ‘get a quote‘ feature. This will enable you to compare costs offered by local suppliers against the fee Homeserve charges. Simply click the link below and fill out the questionnaire to receive your free quote.

Warranty

Like their boiler supply partner BOXT, Homeserve passes on the warranty offered by the manufacturer. The brand and model of the boiler you purchase will determine the length of the warranty.

What you can guarantee is that the boiler warranties are excellent and give you peace of mind for 7-10 years which includes parts and labour.

Homeserve Combi Boilers: Compact, Efficient, and Cost-Saving

Combi boilers offer a key advantage in their compact size. Unlike system boilers, which necessitate an extra water cylinder, and traditional heat-only boilers, requiring separate tanks for hot water storage, combi boilers combine both heating and hot water functions within a single unit. This space-efficient design is especially advantageous for homes with limited space.

Additionally, combi boilers provide hot water on demand, though they can run out if the boiler lacks a sufficient kW output to meet your hot water needs. Nonetheless, these boilers offer excellent water pressure, making them ideal for households with multiple bathrooms. Since the water is heated as it’s used, you won’t experience a decrease in pressure even if two showers are running simultaneously.

Installation of a combi boiler is often simpler and quicker than that of a traditional boiler with separate tanks. This can result in lower installation costs and less disruption to your home during the installation process.

Note: the prices listed below are the purchase prices for the boiler only. They do not include installation costs.

Homeserve System Boilers: Easy installation, efficient heating, and customisable options

For homeowners with ample space to accommodate a water cylinder, a system boiler presents an appealing option. System boilers share the same energy-efficient ratings, dimensions, features, and controls as combi boilers but vary in performance.

System boilers operate by heating water directly from the mains and storing it in a cylinder until required. This setup ensures a consistent supply of hot water readily available at all times, without any fluctuations in temperature or pressure.

Consequently, you can enjoy a shower without the fear of running cold or losing flow power when someone else uses the kettle. Moreover, system boilers typically have fewer moving parts, resulting in quieter operation compared to combi boilers.

Homeserve Heat Only Boilers: Versatility, Efficiency, and Reliability

Heat-only boilers also referred to as Regular boilers, are a traditional type of boiler that is gradually becoming less common due to their bulky nature.

These boilers necessitate separate hot water and cold water tanks, making them suitable primarily for houses or larger apartments with ample storage space. The advantage of heat-only boilers lies in their ability to manage high hot water demands, even when multiple taps are in use simultaneously.

Similar to system boilers, heat-only boilers can be compatible with renewable energy sources like solar thermal panels. They can work alongside these systems to further diminish energy consumption and reduce carbon emissions.

Living with your Homeserve boiler

Homeserve Boiler Warranties

Homeserve offers boiler warranties to provide peace of mind and protection for homeowners in the event of boiler breakdowns or malfunctions. Warranties typically cover the cost of repairs or replacements for various boiler components, including the heat exchanger, burner, controls, valves, and other critical parts.

Depending on the warranty plan selected, coverage may extend to labour costs for repairs carried out by qualified engineers. Some warranty plans also include an annual boiler service to ensure the system remains in optimal condition and to identify any potential issues before they escalate.

Homeserve boiler warranties typically have a duration ranging from 1 to 10 years, depending on your choice of boiler. High-end models have longer warranties. Bear in mind that warranties reflect the quality and reliability of a boiler.

The lower the number of years a warranty covers, the more likely it is to malfunction. Longer warranty periods provide extended protection against unexpected breakdowns and may offer greater peace of mind to homeowners.

Some Homeserve boiler warranties may offer the option to renew or extend coverage at the end of the initial warranty period. Renewing or extending the warranty ensures continued protection for the boiler beyond the initial coverage period.

Homeowners need to review the terms and conditions of their Homeserve boiler warranty to understand any exclusions or limitations. Common exclusions may include pre-existing faults, damage caused by improper installation or maintenance, and wear and tear.

Homeserve also specialises in various boiler insurance policies which provide cover once the boiler warranty has expired. However, there are question marks over the effectiveness of these policies.

Homeserve Boiler Controls

Homeserve offers a range of modern boilers that are equipped with easy-to-use controls and smart thermostat options. This allows you to customise heating schedules to align with your daily routine, ensuring comfort when you need it most. Additionally, you can monitor your energy usage and make adjustments to optimise heating costs.

Certain boiler controls even include weather compensation features, automatically adjusting the boiler’s output based on the outside temperature to maintain a consistent level of indoor comfort.

Homeserve Boiler Cover and Breakdown Options

Homeserve provides a range of boiler cover and breakdown options to ensure homeowners have peace of mind and protection against unexpected boiler issues. Boiler cover plans each provide different levels of coverage for boiler repairs, replacements, and servicing.

Be careful of attractive introductory offers and ask about the cost of the policies after year one.

The most basic entry-level policy starts from as little as £9 a month, £96 a year. However, the following year the price goes up to  £253.44. Its Heating, Plumbing and Electrics Plus with Service policy is £216 for the first year, then jumps to £614.04 in the second year.

You should also be careful about the policy you opt for. Homeserve is very savvy about what its insurance policies cover and what it doesn’t. Customers are led to believe the policies cover more than they do, so ask the sales rep about exclusions.

It’s also worth noting that Homeserve insurance policies do not cover some boiler brands including Ferroli, Gledhill, Keston, Promax, or Powermax.

Homeserve Boiler Surveys and Reviews

Homeserve boasts one of the highest scores in the heating industry. The company’s Trustpilot score has risen from 4.3 to 4.4 (as of April 24) meaning most customers are extremely happy with their experience.

It’s good to see that 72% of customers rated the company as being ‘Great’ or ‘Excellent’ and the majority of reviews are filled with nothing but praise and positive comments.

However, some customers have left negative feedback about their experience with Homeserve but only 9% have given a ‘Poor’ or ‘Bad’ rating which has fallen from 12% in 2020. The good reviews outweigh the bad, so it seems as though Homeserve is a company you can trust to help you find and install a new boiler.

How do Homeserve boilers compare with other boiler brands?

Homeserve appears to offer excellent customer service which is probably the reason the company edges ahead of its competitors, British Gas, Heatable, Glow Green and WarmZilla in the customer ratings.

As a comparison test, Homeserve has received a comparable number of reviews as British Gas on Trustpilot. Homeserve comes out on top with 4.4 out of 5 stars whereas British Gas is rated 4.1 out of 5.

The favourable ratings are also due to Homeserve providing prompt service in the majority of cases. Boasting an extensive network of engineers, customers are often serviced within 24 hours, many on the same day. This is quite extraordinary.

Homeserve also provides comparable financing options as its competitors. Customers who need help in purchasing a replacement boiler can pay a fixed cost at 0% APR for 2 years and 9.9% thereafter.

However, it should be remembered that Homeserve does not supply boilers themselves, but partners with the UK’s number one boiler installation company BOXT. Homeserve specialises in insurance coverage. But they are not the cheapest.

Whilst the introductory fee of £9 a month is attractive, the cost doubles in the second year. Glow Green provides a better deal for service and maintenance breakdown cover called Glow Care which includes service, maintenance and replacement boilers. Prices start from £7.99 per month which includes the option to extend the warranty from five to 12 years.

There is also a huge question mark about what Homeserve insurance policies cover. They offer four packages for both heating and plumbing. If you do use Homeserve, make sure you thoroughly quiz the sales rep about the coverage. Homeserve has a history of reneging on its insurance cover due to technical wording.

Boiler Prices Verdict on the Homeserve Boilers: 4/5

With so many positive customer reviews and the praise Homeserve receives for providing a prompt service leaves us with no hesitation of scoring them highly.

However, we have docked a point over the company’s chequered past which has left doubt in our minds about the reliability and transparency of the company’s advertising.

To focus on the positive first, it is clear that Homeserve makes a concerted effort to quickly remedy problems customers encounter. It is evident from analysing Homeserve’s Trustpilot page that the customer service team are on the ball and the company’s nationwide access to gas-safe engineers enables them to respond quickly.

It is a priority for Homeserve “to get things back up and running swiftly” and multiple respondents have lauded how promptly gas-safe engineers arrive to repair faults. The ‘heretohelpteam’ also responds promptly to complaints and negative reviews.

However, we did find a red flag. It seems as though Homeserve’s insurance policies do not always provide adequate coverage. One Trustpilot respondent mentioned a gas-safe engineer said the policy doesn’t cover anything useful.

That’s not strictly true. Homeserve central heating typically policies cover:

  • Boiler breakdown which results in no heat and hot water
  • Faults with the boiler controls and components
  • Gas supply pipe leaks
  • Repairs caused by leaks within the gas central heating system

Heating and plumbing policies do not cover:

  • External gas pipes that lead to your meter
  • Problems related to plumbing and drainage

The level of coverage is determined by the policy you take out. To confuse matters, Homeserve has four levels of central heating cover, four levels of plumbing and drainage policies and three levels of electric cover.

Alternatively, get comprehensive coverage with the heating, plumbing and electric package for £18 a month and a £60 excess.

When we looked deeper into what Homeserve policies cover in relation to what customers believe they cover when they take out a policy, we found a string of complaints on the Money Saving Expert forum, one of the UK’s leading consumer magazines.

Although the Money Saving Expert forum is from 2011, some of the complaints raised still crop up in recent reviews on Trustpilot. How much has Homeserve improved its insurance policies over the last decade or so?

We cannot honestly that question with the limited resources we can find online, but it does appear that Homeserve is disingenuous about the cover they provide in their advertising. What’s worse is they deploy a deceptive strategy and label boilers “beyond economic repair” if the parts that need replacing are over and above the annual cost of the insurance policy. And sometimes, even when they are significantly below.

Homeserve seems to avoid handling routine repairs by selling “emergency” insurance policies. This means that policies are not valid unless the issue is in your home:

1) is a risk to health and safety

2) poses an immediate risk of damage to property or

3) makes the property uninhabitable

Yet a headline on the company’s website reads:

“Whether it’s taking care of your plumbing, drains, boiler, heating or electrics, trust our Home Experts to help you take better care of your home.”

There is no mention of an emergency. The emergency element would also account for the prompt response of gas-safe engineers. So we know Homeserve does honour its fast response policy to emergencies. The question is whether the engineer will repair your boiler if the fault is not covered by the

This advertorial on ecoexperts.com also leads consumers to believe that Homeserve home insurance has got you covered. Either that piece is not an advertorial, or the writer hasn’t done his research.

There are several other advertorial pieces which are largely positive. We have disregarded these reports in our summing up and focused mainly on customer feedback.

Our verdict of 4 out of 5 reflects Homeserves dedication to providing excellent customer service. The dropped point is the question mark over Homeserves apparent lack of transparency with insurance policies.

However, given the number of negative reviews on Trustpilot has been diluted by three percent, we feel this may be due to improved terms and conditions. But it could be that Homeserve actively encourages customers to leave reviews and because most of their customers are happy, the ratings are more favourable.

We conclude that Homeserve insurance policies are a minefield – so tread carefully.
