ATAG: A Trusted Name in Boilers
ATAG was founded in 1948 in the Netherlands, starting as a manufacturer of metal products before shifting its focus to heating technology. Throughout its history, ATAG has been at the forefront of boiler technology, pioneering advancements in efficiency, sustainability, and reliability.
With almost 80 years of experience, ATAG boilers have earned a reputation for manufacturing gas boilers that deliver exceptional energy efficiency. They are consistently rated as some of the most efficient boilers on the market.
ATAG is committed to sustainable practices and includes several green features in its boilers including weather compensation technology and smart controls which enable you to conveniently manage your heating needs and lower your energy bills.
ATAG’s innovation and energy efficiency have seen them “consistently” receive multiple accolades for their eco-friendly designs, low emissions and focus on cutting-edge technology. Having said that, we can’t find any evidence for said awards other than this advertorial in a manufacturing magazine.
Considerations when buying an ATAG Boiler
ATAG has a reputation for boilers that have exceptional efficiency, durability, and resistance to corrosion. In addition to energy-saving features, the Dutch company’s gas boilers boast the lowest NOx emissions in Europe and have built-in boiler protection features such as frost protection and anti-cycling technology.
Energy-Efficiency
Having spent the last 70 years designing and manufacturing boilers, ATAG sure knows a thing or two about keeping homes warm and comfortable. The company has achieved a SEBDUK rating of 94% which places them among the best in the business.
ATAG’s iCon stainless steel heat exchanger is a standout feature. It’s a key component that contributes to the boiler’s efficiency and durability. This heat exchanger has a lifetime replacement guarantee, highlighting ATAG’s commitment to quality.
In addition to being the most energy efficient boilers in Europe, ATAG boilers have the lowest NOx emissions to help lower their impact on the environment. No matter whether you choose a combi, system or regular boiler from ATAG, you can have peace of mind that your purchase is built to last and boasts high-quality brass and stainless steel components.
ATAG’s Economiser Plus system is designed to further improve efficiency. It captures and reuses residual heat that would typically be lost in the flue gases, recycling it to preheat the water in the heat exchanger.
Dimensions
ATAG boilers are known for their compact size. Measuring 700 x 440 x 355mm, these gas boilers are ideal for homes where space is limited. Despite their small footprint, they deliver powerful heating performance.
Performance Output in kW
The performance output, measured in kilowatts (kW) of a gas boiler is a critical specification that indicates its heating output capacity. The kW rating determines how much heat the boiler can produce, which directly affects its ability to heat your home efficiently. A higher kW rating means the boiler can generate more heat, suitable for larger homes with higher heating demands.
ATAG offer four models, 24kW, 28kW, 36kW and 40kW, which will comfortably heat households of all sizes in the UK.
Ease and Cost of Installation
When you’re budgeting for a new gas boiler, you will also need to take into account the installation costs. The price you see for the boilers does not include installation. Installation charges include labour which is metered by the time spent fitting the boiler.
Some boilers are more difficult to install than others. The easiest boilers to install come with quick-fix installation kits. According to gas-safe engineers, ATAG boilers are easy to fit and components are readily available in the UK.
This all means that installation costs, servicing and maintenance tasks should be reasonably priced. Bear in mind that sourcing parts, servicing and repairs may also incur costs although with a 10 or 12-year warranty, you should be covered for a good number of years.
Although Boiler Prices is not able to provide specific rates for every boiler installation provider, we can say the average installation cost for a new energy-efficient boiler in the UK is between £1,100 – £1,800. It could easily be the case that ATAG gas boiler prices could save you hundreds of pounds over boilers that are more difficult to install.

Warranty
ATAG offers some of the longest warranties in the industry. Its standard warranty is either 10 or 12 years depending on the model which can be extended to an industry-leading 18 years from selected partners. Look out for suppliers that offer the Complete Care Pack FELX. ATAG warranties also include a standard 10-year warranty on the iCon heat exchanger, showcasing its confidence in the durability of its products.
ATAG Combi Boilers: Compact, Efficient, and Cost-Saving
Preferred by 80% of the UK population, combi boilers provide on-demand heating and hot water. They heat water directly from the mains when a tap is turned on, so there’s no need to wait for a cylinder to heat up, making them efficient and responsive.
ATAG combi boilers are A-rated for efficiency and come in a range of sizes (kW outputs) to suit all needs, giving you options regardless of the size of your home. They’re also quiet in operation and have compact dimensions that will easily fit into your home without the need to free up space to store a separate tank or hot water cylinder.
ATAG offers two combi boiler models, both of which are available in a variety of performance outputs. When it comes to cost, you can expect to pay between £1,300 and £2,160, depending on which model and boiler size you require.
Note: the prices listed below are the purchase prices for the boiler only. They do not include installation costs.
COMBI GAS BOILER SERIES | SIZES | SIZE OF HOME | PRICE |

ATAG System Boilers: Easy installation, efficient heating, and customisable options
System boilers require a cylinder to store hot water, making it possible for you to use multiple taps simultaneously without noticing a reduction in pressure. This means that an ATAG system boiler is a great choice if you’re a large household with more than one bathroom and you have high hot water demand.
ATAG system boilers are known for their compact and lightweight design. This makes them suitable for installation in tight spaces, such as kitchen cupboards or airing cupboards. They are also quiet and deliver a 94% ErP which can save on energy bills while providing reliable heating for the home.
ATAG only has one boiler model, the iS system boiler which is available in various output sizes, 15kW, 18kW, 24kW, 32kW and 40kW. Prices range between £1,270 and £1,510, depending on which output you need plus a water cylinder.
Note: the prices listed below are the purchase prices for the boiler only. They do not include installation costs.
SYSTEM GAS BOILER SERIES | SIZES | SIZE OF HOME | PRICE |
---|---|---|---|
iS System | 15 – 40kW | Lower outputs: Small to medium-sized homes with multiple bathrooms. Higher outputs: Medium to large-sized homes with multiple bathrooms. | £1,270 – £1,510 |
ATAG Heat Only Boilers: Versatility, Efficiency, and Reliability
Regular boilers are also known as conventional or heat-only boilers. They’re a popular choice among homeowners who already have an expansion tank in the loft. If you’ve never had a regular boiler before and you now want one, not only do you need enough loft space for the tank but you also need to have room to house a hot water storage cylinder.
ATAG’s range of heat-only boilers is the IR range and comes in various outputs from 15kW to 40kW which are suitable for most homes regardless of the hot water demand. If you also need to install a hot water cylinder, take a look at the iSteel range. The cylinders have a storage capacity of 90 to 300 litres. When it comes to ATAG regular boilers, they feature simple-to-use controls and can be sited pretty much anywhere on your property.
Like the ATAG system, there is just one model in the range and it comes in a variety of heat outputs to suit your requirements and the size of your home. If you do decide to purchase the ATAG regular boiler, it will cost anything from £1,150 to £1,390.
Note: the prices listed below are the purchase prices for the boiler only. They do not include installation costs.
REGULAR GAS BOILER SERIES | SIZES | SIZE OF HOME | PRICE |
---|---|---|---|
iR Regular | 15-40kW | Lower outputs: Small to medium-sized homes with multiple bathrooms. Higher outputs: Medium to large-sized homes with multiple bathrooms. | £1,150 – £1,390 |

ATAG Boiler Warranties
Regardless of whether you buy a combi, system or regular boiler from ATAG, you’ll get a 10 or 12-year manufacturer warranty as standard with the option to extend to 11, 12 14 or 18 years – the best warranty you will find anywhere for the gas boilers. ATAG also offers a 25-year warranty on their steel unvented water cylinders.
The warranty includes all parts and labour costs should anything go wrong with your ATAG boiler. Knowing that your boiler is covered for at least 10 years will give you complete peace of mind, and you can even contact the after-care warranty helpline 24 hours a day and 7 days a week if your boiler runs into problems.
What’s more, you can increase the warranty to years when you purchase your boiler with selected ATAG products. However, it should be noted that not all parts are covered under the warranty including the analogue pressure gauge and heat exchanger.
ATAG Boiler Controls
ATAG’s advanced and intuitive boiler controls are reportedly easy to use. The company’s iCon Control allows homeowners to manage heating requirements with a user-friendly interface, intuitive menus and easy-to-read displays.
Users can adjust settings and program their heating schedules from anywhere using a smartphone app, or with a room-based thermostat and timer. The boilers also come fitted with features like weather compensation, which adjusts the boiler’s output based on outdoor temperature, improving efficiency.
ATAG Boiler Cover and Breakdown Options
ATAG offer service plans that include annual boiler servicing. These plans ensure that the boiler is regularly maintained by qualified engineers, helping to prevent breakdowns and maintain efficiency. Service plans often include priority call-outs and discounts on repairs.
The company does not appear to offer breakdown cover, but with warranties covering you for 10 and 12 years, you shouldn’t need breakdown cover. They do have a 24/7 service help desk, so you can be assured of getting through to someone who can help.
ATAG Boiler Surveys and Reviews
Feedback left on independent customer review sites, heating engineers and installers provides us with a great resource that gives us insights into UK boiler companies. They don’t tell the whole story, but they do give us enough information to make informed choices.
ATAG comes across very well. Their Trustpilot score, in particular, is very impressive. From the 4,500 respondents, ATAG maintains a very high score of 4.8 out of 5 stars. That’s the best we’ve seen. 90% of their customers leave a 5-star rating and 8% are awarded 4 stars.
Homeowners who have installed ATAG boilers often mention the quiet operation, efficient heating, long warranty and customer care. Only one percent of customers had cause to complain and that seems to be when they have a dispute with the warranty.
Yes, ATAG warranties are generous but they don’t cover every part. If the heat exchanger or the analogue pressure gauge malfunctions, you are not covered. That said, if you leave a complaint on Trustpilot ATAG appears to have a history of responding positively.
According to the customer service team, the company has been known to replace parts that are not covered by the warranty. Reviewers have also commented that ATAG take your issues very seriously and their engineers are quick to respond.
*What’s more, it appears that ATAG now offers a “lifetime replacement guarantee on the heat exchanger.’ – Review left Nov 2023.
Heating engineers and installers are also full of praise for ATAG. The feedback we received highlights the ease of installation and maintenance of ATAG boilers, together with the ease of sourcing parts. This is one of the benefits of ATAG working directly with selected partners. The boilers are specifically designed with installer-friendly features, a selection of flues easy access to components and straightforward controls.
Heating engineers also praise the build quality and reliability of the boilers. They also appreciate the company’s customer support and the availability of spare parts.
Digging a little deeper, things start to go awry for ATAG. Consumer magazines are not so full of praise as the reviewers on Trustpilot. We would describe it as faint praise.
The periodic Which? the survey rates ATAG at 83% (as of Feb 24), which is below average for this survey. For a company that positions itself as a premium brand, Which? confess that the overall customer feedback was underwhelming, with only 62% of respondents saying they were satisfied with their boiler. Having said that, the magazine tells us that 84% would recommend the brand to someone else.
Hmm, that’s a 22% gap between satisfied customers and people who would recommend the boiler. Does that feel right to you? Those figures seem to be an anomaly. Which? Break satisfied customers into satisfied (32%) and very satisfied (30%). They don’t tell us what the other categories are, but it’s safe to assume they fall outside satisfied.
ATAG Overall Score
How do ATAG boilers compare with other boiler ATAGs?
ATAG is one of the premium brands on the UK market, and arguably a market leader. The only other brand that can match the Dutch outfit for build quality and reliability (based on warranty) is Worcester-Bosch. The Warwickshire-based company is widely considered to be the market leader in the UK.
Worcester-Bosch can probably justify that claim. They have a Trustpilot rating of 4.6, and although that’s below ATAG’s 4.8 out of five, the British manufacturer has received 10 times more reviews, which is a significant number.
However, ATAG arguably offers better value for money. Its premium range is significantly less expensive than Worcester-Bosch and has the same ErP rating of 94%. Worcester-Bosch has more pocket-friendly options but the lower-end products only have an energy-efficient rating of 90% and a 5-year warranty. That indicates Worcester’s entry-level boilers are no match for ATAG.
The only boiler brand that does beat ATAG for energy-efficiency is Viessmann which has achieved a 95% ErP rating. The German giants can also match ATAG for build quality and reliability. Although the company only offers 7-year warranties as standard, you can extend to 12 years. Viessmann boilers are known to survive around 15 years before they need replacing. The most notable difference between the two companies, however, is the standard of their customer service. Whilst it is clear that ATAG makes a real effort to deliver exceptional customer care Viessmann customers do not receive the same level of service. 9% of their customers only leave a 1-star rating and both companies have more or less the same number of reviews.
Assessing the boilers in the same price bracket, energy efficiency is the same. But ATAG still runs out winners by offering a 10-year warrant as standard compared to Worcester-Bosch’s 5-year standard warranty, The British manufacturer does give you the opportunity of an extended warranty, but ATAG trumps them again with 14 and 18-year warranties.
Boiler Prices Verdict on the ATAG Boilers: 5/5
Having assessed ATAG boilers in quite some depth, we can confidently say, they are among the best energy-efficient gas boilers in the UK market if not the best. The Dutch giants produce high-quality energy-efficient boilers that retain 94% of the heat.
This is only bettered by Viessmann which can deliver 95% with their premium range, although at the lower end, the Shropshire-based boiler brand only delivers 92% which is less than similar-priced models from ATAG.
In addition to an impressive energy-efficient rating, ATAG also runs our winners on reliability and build quality as well, which is reflected in the generous industry-leading warranties they offer at either 10, 12, 14 or 18 years. Nobody else gets even close to 18 years. Every other brand maxs out at 12 years for extended warranties. Standard warranties are typically five or seven years.
We’re also impressed by ATAG’s customer service and aftercare. It is clear from their Trustpilot reviews that they do their level best to respond promptly, and are seen to address issues that are not under warranty whenever customers air their grievances.
So, all in all, we have no hesitancy in awarding ATAG full marks. They also demonstrate they have a right to claim they are the best boiler brand in the UK.
And it seems as though ATAG is worrying Worcester-Bosch – enough for a heating magazine to write what appears to be a hit piece on ATAG. We say that because the article mentions Worcester-Bosch eight times and directly compares ATAG with the Warwickshire-based company. Even though there is no real need to compare brands.
But what gives the piece away is that 3 of the 5 cons listed against ATAG are not true and the other two apply to all boiler manufacturers. The same magazine also favours Worcester-Bosch in a head-to-head. So the whole shebang seems biased.
We’re not convinced by the Which? survey either given that it’s not consistent with Trustpilot. Usually, the Which? survey corresponds with customer reviews on independent review sites. The only time they don’t is when a brand is below par and has paid for a favourable review in a consumer magazine.
ATAG do have a couple of valid cons you should be wary of, however. It is reported that they use contractors as heating engineers. This is backed up by one reviewer on Trustpilot if it is a genuine review. ATAG, on the other hand, says they specifically work with selected partners to ensure you have access to qualified engineers who are familiar with ATAG boilers so that the best customer care is provided.
This system often takes the burden away from homeowners. If your boiler breaks down, you can contact your supplier who will arrange for a heating engineer to repair the boiler or contact ATAG on your behalf.
The other issue we suggest you look out for is what the warranty covers. Most complaints surfacing from angry ATAG customers relate to parts not being covered by the warranty.
Having said that, it does appear as though ATAG still respond kindly to aggrieved customers even when parts are not covered by the warranty. Moreover, it appears as though the company recently changed its warranty policy to include more parts.
It appears as though ATAG is prepared to go the extra mile to become better known in the UK. The only reason they haven’t is because the Dutch company has a history of serving the commercial sector rather than the public sector. In addition, they don’t seem to be on the right side of writers commenting on the heating industry. Whether that’s bias or affiliation payments we don’t know, but it is clear that established brands are given a nod, nod, wink, wink,
So, why buy an ATAG boiler?
The question should be why not buy an ATAG boiler? The answer would be much shorter.
ATAG boilers have a lot going for them, such as their impressive energy-efficient features, low NOx emissions and brass and stainless steel components. And you don’t just have to take our word for it. ATAG is the UK’s highest-rated boiler ATAG on Trustpilot, showing that homeowners are fond of these boilers too.
However, it should be noted that ATAG hasn’t received as many reviews as some of their competitors so it will be interesting to see how that pans out. What we can tell you is that in January 2022, the company had a 4.8 out of 5 rating from 3900 reviews. In February 2024, they have maintained a 4.8 out of 5 rating but now have over 4500. No stars dropped in over 600 reviews is a good sign.
Many owners have said that their ATAG boiler is easier to use, more efficient and super-quiet compared to their old systems, and some have left excellent feedback about the service and technical support team. From what we’ve learned and read, it seems as though ATAG is a name you can trust!
ATAG has a dedicated team of after-care service consultants who are trained in the entire product range and can offer you advice and support when you need it. As we said before, the service is available 24 hours, 7 days a week, in case you have an emergency or even if you just need answers to questions. It’s also worth mentioning that the ATAG website has a Support Centre page, which includes troubleshooting tips, technical FAQs and links to product manuals that help you navigate error messages yourself.
