Potterton system boilers work on the principle of stored hot water, however, many of the individual components of the heating and hot water system are built into the boiler itself.

Living with your Potterton boiler

All Potterton boilers come with a manufacturer-backed warranty of 7 years or less as standard, and the length of the warranty will depend on which model you choose to have installed at home.

Potterton Boiler Surveys and Reviews

Surveys and reviews are usually the most reliable sources on offer from which you can piece together a reasonable conclusion about boiler and boiler brands. 

Unfortunately, on this occasion, the reviews and surveys for Potterton are sparse and unreliable. As a matter of fact, they are somewhat contradictory – which, in our view, is a red flag. 

For example, the company’s Gold Combi 24 HE was voted as a Which? Best Buy for four years running between 2007 to 2010. There are no reviews from this period to back up the claim and we are not convinced that Potterton has maintained this level of efficiency or reliability. 

This is where things get patchy. We can’t really rely on awards given more than a decade ago given the innovation of boilers in more recent years. According to Which?, Potterton achieved a general score of 74% and earned 5 stars for ease of use, features, NOx emissions and simple installation. The boiler series also got excellent feedback on its durability, efficiency and hot water output.

In recent years, it’s surprising to see that Potterton has an overall Which? a score of 54%. Not only is this considered average, it’s a significant 20% decline from recent years. So what’s happened? 

Having said that, the customer satisfaction score Which? reviewers awarded came out at 69% which is not too shabby. However, customers only make up 20% of the final average with 30% going to gas-safe engineers, 30% to reliability and 40%  – which means Potterton is not a favourite amongst gas-safe engineers and the company’s boast about reliability is called into question.

It’s the question around reliability that is the most confusing. The Which? survey reveals Potterton was awarded 4 out of 5 stars for customer score and build quality, so it seems as though homeowners are quite happy with their Potterton boilers. 

On the other hand, Which? tells us that 27% of Potterton customers would definitely recommend the boiler they brought to friends and family. The average among other brands is 42%. Which? doesn’t give us much confidence that Potterton boilers are that great. 

Moreover, in the latest article on the survey (updated Feb 2024), Which? mentions Potterton has “slipped down our rankings over time as it struggles to maintain a rival-beating” boiler that customers can rely on. 

The company’s “reliability” tag they hang their hat on does not appear to be holding up. Its Trustpilot page seems to confirm this as well, although there is not a sufficient number of reviews for us to make an accurate judgement. 

According to the eight reviewers that purchased a Potterton, the boilers consistently develop faults and Baxi’s customer service team are not very responsive in relation to complaints regarding Potterton boilers. If you look at our Baxi review, the company delivers one of the best customer support services in the heating industry.

How do Potterton boilers compare with other boiler brands?

The lack of available specifications and customer reviews poses a challenge when comparing Potterton boilers with other brands in the UK. The company positions itself in the mid-range and value-range price points and offers industry-standard warranties that are no better or no worse than their rivals. 

We’re struggling to find a USP that helps Potterton compete against its rivals. What they offer is simply bang average or below. The only selling point is that the company is part of the Baxi group, but Baxi manufactures better quality boilers for around the same price points. 

Baxi customers report they got a good 15 years from their Baxi. The numbers stated by Potterton customers are 6 years before they decided to replace it. And not with another Potterton. That tells you everything you need to know. 

Gas-safe engineers also recommend other leading boiler brands such as Ideal, Worcester Bosch, Viessmann Vitodens 100-W and Vaillant. Ideal can match Potterton for price and deliver better quality. 

Boiler Prices Verdict on the Potterton Boilers: 2/5

One of the reasons for establishing Boiler Prices was to protect UK consumers against brands like Potterton. On the surface, a company that has been established for over 160 years and ticks all the boxes in terms of meeting industry standards can easily bamboozle homeowners. 

What’s more, sympathetic articles which are purely marketing vehicles for boiler companies don’t reveal the whole story. And in some cases, completely mislead consumers who take the time to perform independent research. 

For example, one website promoting eco-energy writes: 

“Because they’re part of the Baxi group, Potterton also enjoys the 4.6/5 rating out of over 56,000 reviews of their parent company on Trustpilot.” 

That’s not true. Potterton may be part of the same group as Baxi, but the companies manufacture boilers independently of each other. Unfortunately for Potterton customers, the boilers they purchased don’t match the standards of a Baxi. 

This is the story that is reflected on Potterton’s Trustpilot page. The company only has a rating of 2.2 out of five. Every reviewer has given a 1 out of 5 rating. Although only eight customers have left a review it is not sufficient to provide an accurate judgement of the quality of the boiler or the customer service. 

That said, the reliability of the boilers and poor customer service are the primary complaints. A couple of the reviewers reported having to replace the boiler due to persistent failures even after repairs had been undertaken. 

Having said that, it’s difficult to judge a company that only has eight reviews on its Trustpilot page. We have to bear in mind that aggrievances are much more likely to prompt people to leave a complaint than satisfied customers. 

Yet it is clear that Potterton makes zero effort to encourage its customers to promote the company through Trustpilot. On the flip side, companies that are confident about their products proactively seek customer support by requesting reviews. 

The lack of confidence in their boilers is reflected in the length of their warranties. 1 and 2-year warranties appear to be the norm on its Promax range and Gold range. They even offer 12 12-month free warranty on the Promax 30 HE. 

The Titanium range comes with a 7-year warranty. Warranties can be extended but no details are given for how long. Affiliate websites mention Potterton offers 10-year warranties which we presume is for the Titanium range. If you do invest in a Potterton, the Titanium range appears to be the only sensible option.

So, why buy a Potterton boiler? 

The only leverage Potterton has going for it is history. Since 1850, Potterton has manufactured its range of boilers in the UK, so you’ll be choosing a British brand with over 160 years of experience. 

All of its boilers use the latest heating technology but the benchmarks just about meet the energy efficiency requirements for the UK heating industry. We could also argue that Potterton is competitively priced but you will find better value for money elsewhere.

LPG Gas boilers are manufactured by some of the world’s best-known boiler brands and are designed for homes that are not connected to mains gas.

If you live in one of the 4 million UK homes that are not linked to the gas grid, you may find that an LPG boiler is the best option for your property. LPG stands for Liquefied Petroleum Gas, which is the fuel that is used to produce enough energy to heat your water. Just like a natural gas or oil boiler, an LPG boiler will enable you to control your heating and make sure you always have plenty of hot water running through your kitchen and bathroom taps.

How Do LPG Boilers Work?

The difference between LPG boilers and natural gas boilers is that the fuel (LPG) has to be delivered to your home and stored in a tank. Because of this, LPG boilers are very similar to oil boilers in that they are a great option for off-grid UK homes, only they use a different fuel type to make the boiler work. However, LPG-fired boilers operate in the same way as oil and natural gas boilers because they need to burn the fuel to heat the water that is sent to your radiators and taps.

LPG Boiler Running Costs

It’s hard to say how much you’ll need to spend on your heating and hot water each year when using an LPG boiler because there are a number of factors that influence your annual bills, such as your home’s efficiency, the amount of energy you use, boiler efficiency and the LPG supplier’s rate. However, we can tell you that heating with LPG has a cost of around 6.16p/kW and the average yearly cost is just under £800. Please remember, this information should be used as a guide only because it won’t be accurate for every household in the UK.

You’ll also need to pay a standing charge if you decide to rent your LPG tank. Prices vary between suppliers and you can expect to pay anything from £60 to £70 annually. If you opt for an underground tank, the tank rental fees will be higher.

How is LPG Stored and Delivered?

Like we said earlier, LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) must be stored in an external tank, either somewhere in your garden or underground. Special pipework and vessels also need to be installed to link the tank to your property. As there are different tank sizes available, we recommend you ask a professional to help you determine the right size for you and your home. If you choose to have an above-ground tank, it must be installed on a concrete or prefabricated base. An underground tank might be best if you prefer to keep the tank hidden, however, the lid or hatch is usually visible so that your supplier can refuel as and when required. You should seek professional advice about whether it would be better to place your tank above or below ground.

The LPG fuel is delivered by a road tanker that has its own pump to refuel LPG storage tanks. This means that the delivery tanker needs good road access. Also, the space between the road and your storage tank must be free from obstruction so that the driver can get to your tank. Since you’ll need to arrange these deliveries yourself, it’s important to keep an eye how much fuel you’re using. If you don’t do this, you could run out. Having said that, you can purchase a tank monitoring system that monitors the amount of LPG in your tank and alerts your supplier when your tank level is low and you need more fuel.

Advantages and Disadvantages of LPG Boilers

LPG boilers have become more popular over recent years because they have many appealing benefits but they do have some drawbacks that need to be considered as well. We’ve put together a list of the advantages and disadvantages of using LPG to provide your home with heating and hot water.

The Advantages

• Highly efficient: Most modern LPG boilers are A-rated for energy efficiency and can achieve efficiencies of 90% or above, which means you’ll save money on your fuel bills.
  
• Cleaner fuel: Although a fossil fuel, LPG can help to reduce your carbon footprint because it’s a far cleaner option than oil.
  
• Cheaper upfront cost than oil boilers: LPG boilers tend to be cheaper to purchase than oil burners, making them ideal if your home doesn’t connect to mains gas and you have less money to play with when replacing your boiler.
  
• Smaller than oil boiler units: The majority of LPG boilers are fairly compact compared to oil boilers, and some even have an extremely low noise output.
  
• Better choice of models: There aren’t that many boiler brands that make oil boilers but, thankfully, the same can’t be said for LPG boilers. The Disadvantages
